Whiplash Weather in Saxony: Thunderstorms and Chill Days Ahead

Get ready for a wild weather ride, folks! Saxony, after enjoying a sunny start to May, has been hit by a whirlwind of thunderstorms this weekend. According to Germany's meteorological service, the DWD, these storms have delivered sporadic rainfall throughout the region, though the amounts varied.
Thankfully, no major calamities were reported by the police during the stormy nights on Sunday. However, there were a few tree-related incidents, especially in the Vogtland region. A lucky driver narrowly escaped harm near Treuen when a tree fell onto the road just ahead of him. Despite colliding with the obstacle, he miraculously emerged unscathed, as per the Zwickau police.
The heaviest downpours were experienced in an area stretching from Leipzig to the Lusatian Lake District, with rainfall of up to 25 liters per square meter within 24 hours. In Dresden, 6 to 8 liters were recorded, while Chemnitz received 7 liters.
These thunderstorms were the result of the clash between subtropical warm air from the southwest and cooler air from the North Sea. This boundary saw intense showers, heavy rain, and thunderstorms, according to the DWD.
Brace yourself, Saxony, as the weather forecast suggests calmer days ahead. Peter Zedler from the DWD says, "We've had our fill of rain for now." The coming days will be mostly dry. However, it will also be noticeably cooler than before, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 15 degrees Celsius. The sun will be often hidden behind clouds, keeping the forest fire risk in Saxony at minimal levels 1 or 2.
As for the immediate outlook, temperatures will drop to 14-16°C (57-61°F) by May 4, with Annaberg-Buchholz experiencing 36°F (2°C) afternoon temperatures and strong northeasterly winds up to 18 mph by the end of the weekend. The next few days will bring cool temperatures in the 40s–50s°F (5–15°C) range, with nights plunging to low 20s°F (-6 to -1°C) in mountainous areas like Annaberg-Buchholz. Windy conditions are expected, with persistent NNE winds at 15-21 mph, particularly in higher elevations. Despite the cool and windy conditions, most days will remain mostly cloudy to scattered, with minimal precipitation chances.
