Notes

Bavaria has been in the thick of it this year, battling a series of mighty storms. The German Weather Service (DWD) has released preliminary data on tornado activity in 2025, highlighting turbulent times for the region.

Tornadoes in Bavaria - DWD maps it out

The 2025 tornado season kicked off slowly at first. However, the DWD has added several new cases to its database over the last fortnight. They're tracking both confirmed tornadoes, suspected cases, and lurking probabilities. These will be double-checked later but are likely to be confirmed.

So far, there are 13 confirmed tornadoes and six possible cases nationwide, according to the DWD. There's no escaping the turbulence in Bavaria - Untertheres, close to Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia, witnessed a confirmed tornado on May 28. Another instance on the same day occurred in Schweinfurt, listed by the Tornado List Germany, but it didn't make it onto the DWD map. The first suspected twister surfaced in Döhlau, north-east of Hof, as early as March 25.

Manageable numbers so far... but thunder isn't over yet

Expert meteorologists are hesitant to reach conclusions. With plausible cases yet to be confirmed, the overall count is still reasonable. However, the tornado potential remains heightened, especially in September. Moreover, there's a likelihood of frequent waterspouts hitting the North and Baltic Seas in August and September[4].

Bonus Facts

  • The broader European tornado season of 2025 has been particularly eventful, resulting in three fatalities and at least 10 injuries, with 116 confirmed tornadoes as of June[1]. One significant tornado struck Steinau an der Strasse in Hesse, causing damage to homes and farmland[3]. However, this event transpired outside of Bavaria.
  • There was an episode of chaotic turbulence on a Ryanair flight in southern Germany, necessitating an emergency landing[5]. It remains undetermined if this event was tornado-related, specifically within Bavaria.

Closing Thoughts

Despite the preliminary and somewhat limited data on the 2025 tornado season in Bavaria, it's abundantly clear that the region has faced its fair share of weather-related disasters. While the numbers seem manageable at present, the DWD urges caution, as the peak of the tornado season lies ahead. According to the DWD, there's still two and a half summer months to go, with the tornado probability still on the rise[4]. So, buckle up, Bavaria - the wind is far from subsiding!

Based on the DWD's data, there are currently 13 confirmed tornadoes and six possible cases in Bavaria, highlighting the importance of weather-forecasting to anticipate upcoming disasters. As the weather service predicts an increased tornado potential, especially in September, it is crucial for residents to stay informed about the weather conditions to ensure their safety.
