Severe weather destruction in Lünzen: highway shut down
In the district of Warendorf, the picturesque Luzenbrockhof estate has been hit hard by a severe storm overnight on Wednesday. Emergency forces from several cities worked tirelessly for seven hours to clear the path, as the first 130 trees blocking the way were removed.
The damage is extraordinary, according to Matthias Reimers, head gardener and deputy head of the building yard at Luzenbrockhof. Notable are the partly twisted trees that have broken off in different directions, and more than 200 trees have fallen or been snapped off in the storm event.
The main house at Luzenbrockhof remained undamaged, but the side building, which had just been newly roofed, was struck by an oak tree. Initial findings suggest that no one was injured in the storm.
The city was not prepared for such a storm event, and the extent of the damage was much greater than initially reported. The damage is primarily to oaks, some of which are estimated to be 150 years old. The leaves on the oaks may have provided more attack surface, causing them to react like wind sails and potentially leading to breakages.
A newly purchased used hay tedder on the Luzenbrockhof property was also damaged, and the root plates of 100 to 120-year-old oaks have damaged the asphalt road leading to Luzenbrockhof, posing a risk to pedestrians and cyclists. The L171 had to be cleared of trees to remove the immediate danger.
As a result, the city of Schneverdingen has announced that the road leading to Luzenbrockhof from the L171 will be closed for an estimated one to two weeks due to storm damage. The Dreyershofer Weg must also be thoroughly inspected for safety reasons.
At this time, no new information about injuries or further road closures has been provided. The team at Luzenbrockhof continues to assess the damage and work towards restoring the estate to its former glory.
