Severe weather conditions lead to floods

Heavy rain has deluged the southern region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous federal state, on Saturday, leading to inundated basements and streets. No reported injuries have been confirmed by authorities in the Euskirchen district, between Bonn and Aachen, and the Rhein-Erft district, near Cologne.

In Erftstadt, approximately 100 buildings required attention from fire departments, according to a spokesperson from Kerpen Fire Department. Meanwhile, the police in Euskirchen reported relatively few deployments, describing some streets and basements as having minimal water.

The German Weather Service (DWD) had earlier warned of potentially severe thunderstorms in the early evening, with a particular focus on southern NRW. According to the alert, there was a possibility of heavy rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter within a short period, and winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, with the potential for hail. The forecast predicts further thunderstorms in the night leading to Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Pride festival in Wiesbaden, Hesse, temporarily paused its celebrations late in the afternoon. However, events are expected to resume in the evening, as confirmed by a police spokesperson. Over 2,500 participants attended the demonstration during the day, with evening performances from various artists planned for the Pride summer festival on a site near the main station.

Stuttgart residents should also prepare for impending thunderstorms and severe weather, potentially including heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds. The risk of severe weather is predicted to be higher on Sunday compared to Saturday.

It is always advisable to consult local news sources or official weather forecasting services for the most accurate and up-to-date information on weather warnings, flooding conditions, and any emergency measures taken. The German Weather Service (DWD) provides weather forecasts and warnings, while local news outlets such as Süddeutsche Zeitung and Bild often report on weather-related events and emergency responses.
