Severe Weather Approaching: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Forecast for Maharashtra, Kerala, the Northeast, and Delhi; Weather Warnings Issued in Multiple Regions as the Monsoon Progresses
Active Monsoon Phase Predicted Across India
The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into several parts of India, bringing much-needed rainfall to many regions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon has reached Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Karnataka (including Bengaluru), Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and the Northeastern states. Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur have fully received the monsoon, while Assam & Meghalaya have partially received it.
Over the next three days, conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance further into the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and more Northeastern states.
Heavy Rainfall Predicted for West and South Peninsular India
A low-pressure area is developing over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts. This low-pressure area is expected to intensify over the next few days, leading to heavy to very heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Karnataka during August 13-17. Extremely heavy falls are expected in Bihar, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam (August 13), and Telangana (August 13-14).
Over the southern peninsula, rain chances remain low in most parts of Tamil Nadu, except for isolated heavy rainfall in Coimbatore and Nilgiris.
Northeast India
Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Isolated very heavy rainfall is forecast over Arunachal Pradesh (August 13-15), Assam, and Meghalaya on August 13 and between August 7-9, continuing the active monsoon phase.
Northwest and Other Regions
Widespread very heavy rainfall is predicted over Uttarakhand with isolated extremely heavy rainfall on August 13. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and Jammu during the next 6-7 days. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh will see heavy to very heavy rain spells between August 13-18. Light rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand throughout the week.
Additional Notes
Multiple cyclonic circulations and a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal are the major drivers of this active monsoon pattern, influencing widespread rainfall in Central, East, South, West, Northeast, and Northwest India. This forecast suggests an active monsoon phase with heavy rainfall events, particularly in Northeast India, West and South Peninsular regions, and parts of the Northwest, during August 13-20, 2025.
Based on the weather forecast and the active monsoon phase, we can expect continued heavy rainfall in Karnataka due to the low-pressure area intensifying. Additionally, weather-forecasting predicts extremely heavy falls in Karnataka, especially from August 13-14.
