Germany's June isn't off to a great start, with the German Weather Service (DWD) sounding the alarm for severe weather with thunderstorms, storms, and rain. Here's what to expect:

"A cold front, west of Norway, has moved in from the northwest, but it's crawling southeast at a snail's pace. Behind it, we're seeing slightly warmer air masses, though the south remains warm and humid. In the south and Saxony, thunderstorms are forecast in the morning and afternoon, with localized downpours of up to 15 liters per square meter in an hour."

Small hail and winds up to 70 km/h

During the day, the DWD anticipates significant thunderstorms in the south, parts of the east, and the southern center. Heavy rain with amounts of up to 20 l/qm within a short time, small hail, and gusts up to 70 km/h (Bft 8 to 9) are probable. The south may experience localized severe weather due to heavy rain of up to 30 l/qm, larger hail, and gusts up to 80 km/h (Bft 9). In the north, short thunderstorms with small hail and gusts up to 65 km/h (Bft 8) could also occur.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy, with occasional showers and thunderstorms in the east and north. Mostly, it will remain dry. Temperatures in the northwest will reach 17 to 20 degrees, while the rest of the country will experience 21 to 24 degrees. Light to moderate west to northwest wind.

  1. Given the current cold front moving southeast, the community policy should emphasize caution, particularly for residents in the south, parts of the east, and the southern center of Germany, as these regions are at a higher risk for severe weather with thunderstorms, heavy rain, small hail, and strong winds.
  2. In the aftermath of the unsettled weather, it would be beneficial for environmental agencies to assess the impact of the storms, thunderstorms, and hail on the local ecosystems, as the weather-forecasting data indicates a higher probability of localized severe weather in specific areas of Germany.
