Severe weather advisory issued in three areas
As of early August 2025, the Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued yellow weather warnings for three different regions of Iceland: Faxaflói, South Iceland, and the Central Highlands.
In Faxaflói, located in West Iceland, a yellow weather warning for strong winds was issued on July 7, 2025 (source [2]). The winds are expected to be strong enough to warrant advisory status this afternoon. Sharp wind gusts near mountains in Faxaflói could create hazardous conditions for vehicles sensitive to strong winds. The public is advised to secure loose objects and there is a risk of tents blowing away. The yellow warning for Faxaflói takes effect at 6 p.m.
In South Iceland and the Central Highlands, forecasts from the Icelandic Meteorological Office on August 6-7 indicate northerly winds ranging from 3 to 13 m/s with intermittent rain showers, especially in the south and central areas of the Highlands (source [1]). Wind speeds can reach up to 13 m/s in certain northern and northwest areas by evening. Rainfall is intermittent, with partly cloudy conditions prevailing, although some showers are expected mainly in the south in the afternoon.
The weather conditions in Faxaflói are expected to be similar to those in South Iceland and the Central Highlands. All yellow warnings are expected to expire between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. tonight.
The yellow warnings for South Iceland and the Central Highlands take effect at 9 p.m. Now, Faxaflói has been added to the list of areas under yellow weather warning. The weather warnings cover South Iceland, the Central Highlands, and now Faxaflói.
Temperature during the daytime is between 10 to 18 °C, with the warmest temperatures generally in the northeast. The weather is cooling in the north but warming in the southwest, suggesting a mild temperature gradient across the country (source [1]).
