Severe Weather Advisory: India Meteorological Department Warns of Torrential Rain in Rajasthan, Odisha, Gujarat, Bihar, and Multiple Other Regions, with Red and Orange Alerts in Effect
As the monsoon season continues its course across India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather update for several regions, highlighting heavy rainfall episodes in various parts of the country.
Northwest India is expected to see predominantly below-normal rainfall activity over most parts during the week, with isolated instances of heavy rainfall in West Rajasthan. Light rain is forecast intermittently from July 14 to 19.
East and Central India, on the other hand, are forecast to experience near-normal rainfall activity. Extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) is very likely at isolated places in Madhya Pradesh on July 17. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected over the western Himalayan region and the plains for the next 7 days.
West India is predicted to experience intermittent light to moderate rain in parts between July 14 and 19. Certain areas such as Madhya Maharashtra have already recorded heavy rainfall on some days earlier in July. Squally weather with strong winds is also likely over parts of the Arabian Sea adjoining West India.
Northeast India is expected to see near-normal rainfall over most parts. Recent days saw heavy rainfall at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. Continued intermittent light rain is anticipated over this region from July 14 to 19.
In South India, central and south Peninsular India are likely to experience near-normal to above-normal rainfall. Extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) is very likely at isolated places over Kerala on July 17, 19, and 20; and in South Interior Karnataka on July 18. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Karnataka during July 17-23, with strong surface winds of 40-50 kmph over the region for the next 5 days.
The forecast highlights a continued active monsoon with localized heavy rainfall events in certain areas, consistent with the monsoon’s onset timing and seasonal pattern this year. Two well-marked low-pressure areas have been identified, contributing to the rainfall activity.
The IMD has advised local administrations and residents to stay alert, especially in regions under heavy rainfall warnings. It is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant and follow safety measures during this monsoon season to ensure their well-being.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a general news alert for the weather forecast in West India, predicting intermittent light to moderate rain in parts from July 14 to 19, and specifically warning of squally weather with strong winds over parts of the Arabian Sea adjoining West India. In South India, the IMD forecasts near-normal to above-normal rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) very likely at isolated places over Kerala on July 17, 19, and 20, and in South Interior Karnataka on July 18.
