Torrential Thunderstorms Ahead in Bavaria
Imminent arrival of powerful storms - Severe storms with intense thunder predicted for the region
Brace yourselves, Bavaria! The skies are going to open up with a vengeance today! According to the German Weather Service (DWD), we're in for a wild ride with severe thunderstorms, hail, gusty winds, and torrential rain hitting the region.
These storms are predicted to be particularly nasty in Swabia and the Bavarian Forest. Overnight, there were isolated thunderstorms across the Free State, and in Wallgau (district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen), residents had to battle against hail so brutal that they needed to clear streets and properties with snow shovels. Thankfully, while there were some flooded streets, cellars, and fallen trees, no major incidents or serious damages were reported.
Now, you might be wondering if these storms will rain on the parade of the Nations League semi-final between Germany and Portugal in Munich's Allianz Arena this evening. Temperatures will climb up to 20°C in the Rhön and 30°C in the Passau region today, but the funky weather starts early in Franconia, where there's a chance of heavy rain and hail and up to 20 liters of rain per square meter per hour possible. In the afternoon, severe thunderstorms and winds gusting up to 110 kilometers per hour (and potentially even as high as 130 km/h) are expected to tear through Bavaria from the east.
"It's gonna start in Baden-Württemberg, move north, probably sweep through Munich, then head towards the Bavarian Forest," said a meteorologist from the DWD. However, they emphasized that the path of these storms isn't carved in stone quite yet. As for how it might impact the match in Munich, the expert declared, "The peak will be between 19:00 and 21:00, but it'll start in the afternoon."
And wait, there's more! The DWD also warned about hailstones the size of golf balls (up to five centimeters in diameter) and localized heavy rain of up to 30 liters per square meter. In the föhn valleys of the Alps, winds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour are expected before things calm down overnight. The good news is that after Thursday, it should mostly just rain in Bavaria with occasional thunderstorms.

While the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain is scheduled for this coming Sunday, 8 June 2025 in the same venue, it remains to be seen whether any weather-related chaos will upend those plans. In the meantime, fans are encouraged to keep an eye on local weather updates and official UEFA communications for the most recent information. Stay safe out there!
Be mindful of the approaching thunderstorms in Bavaria as they are predicted to bring severe weather conditions, including hail, strong winds, and torrential rain. The Commission, consulted on the draft directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to carcinogens, may have to also consider providing safety measures for workers in case of severe weather incidents.
