Brace for Bavarian Thunderstorm Sweep

Get ready for some wild weather in the Free State, folks! The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning. The storm isn't messing around—it's bringing hail, gusty winds, and hefty rainfalls, especially in the swanky regions of Swabia and the Bavarian Forest.

Last night, there were some isolated thunderstorms reported, causing quite a stir. In the quaint town of Wallgau (nestled in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen), residents found themselves wielding snow shovels to clear their streets and properties from hailshowers. The local control center representativeremarked that while there were some common issues like flooded streets and overflowing cellars, along with fallen trees, there were no major incidents or damages recorded thus far. Similarly, the Bavarian police headquarters' initial reports showed no significant incidents or damages stemming from the night's tempest.

But what about the Nations League semi-final, you ask?

The weather forecast expects temperatures to climb to 20°C in the Rhön and a blistering 30°C in the Passau region today. Expect a deluge in Franconia, with up to 20 liters of rain per square meter per hour possible, and hail storms as well. Come late afternoon, severe thunderstorms and gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour (and even an impressive 130 kph!) are forecast to barrel across Bavaria from the east.

"The storm starts rolling in Baden-Württemberg, heads north, possibly skirting Munich, and then sprints towards the Bavarian Forest," a DWD meteorologist explained. However, despite the crystal ball gazing, the precise path remains uncertain, especially considering the Nations League semi-final between the Germans and the Portuguese happening later in the evening at Munich's Allianz Arena. But one thing's for certain: the peak is between 19:00 and 21:00, and it's setting off in the afternoon.

Hold onto your hats, folks, as hailstones up to five centimeters in diameter are predicted, with a slim chance of stones up to ten centimeters. And in those Alpine foothills, gusts of between 50 and 60 kph are on the horizon, dropping off substantially by nightfall. On Thursday, rain's expected to keep pouring in Bavaria, with occasional thunderstorms, but let's hope things have cooled down by then!

(Remember, this event took place back in 2025. The 2025 UEFA Nations League semi-final match between Germany and Portugal was unaffected by the weather conditions, with Portugal ultimately emerging victorious.)(Furthermore, later matches or events may encounter weather disruptions, but these decisions are always made by the organizers or venue management, prioritizing safety and logistics.)(The retractable roof at the Allianz Arena might offer some protection against adverse weather, but its efficacy would depend on the specifics of the storm and the decisions made by the stadium management.)

  • Despite the severe thunderstorm warning, the Commission has not been consulted on the draft directive pertaining to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to carcinogens in the weather-forecasting sector.
  • As the storm sweeps through Bavaria, with hail, gusty winds, and heavy rainfalls, workers in meteorology labs should be mindful of their exposure to potential carcinogens while ensuring continuous weather forecasting services for public safety.
