Severe storms lash the southern regions

Stormy Weather Ahead!
Offenbach (dpa) - Brace yourselves for some wild weather in eastern Baden-Württemberg and southern Bavaria starting from the afternoon. "Storm 'Tim' is stirring things up in Germany's weather lab," says meteorologist Marco Manitta from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach. This stormy blast will set the stage for a gloomy Pentecost weekend.
While the heart of the storm rages over the North Atlantic between Iceland and Scotland, its impact extends all the way to Central Europe. The associated frontal system slices across Germany, separating cold air in the northwest from humid and energetic air in the southeast, creating a "severe thunderstorm situation."
Rain, Thunder, and Gales
A mixed rain and thunderstorm area moves northeast in the morning. In the afternoon, heavy thunderstorms will follow, marching steadily eastwards. Southern Germany will bear the brunt, with expected heavy thunderstorms from the afternoon onwards. According to DWD, these thunderstorms can bring "heavy downpours, large hail, and fierce winds, sometimes reaching hurricane speeds."
Föhn Collapse or Thunderstorm Dynamics?
The southern Alpine foothills show a tricky pattern, with the usual Föhn winds preventing thunderstorm formation. But here's where it gets interesting: Sometimes, these Föhn winds can suddenly pick up to storm force speeds - a phenomenon known as Föhn collapse (though it's not a widely recognized term in meteorology). While it shares similarities with Föhn winds and Föhn effect, it's not directly related to them. Rather, it may be linked to storm dynamics, where wind shear disrupts thunderstorm maintenance. Regardless, it's wise for sailors on the southern Bavarian lakes to tread carefully.
In the northwest, skin-tingling sunshower treats await: a delightful blend of sun and clouds, with mild temperatures gracing the sky. By Thursday, the weather will take a turn for the worse, with the chill of the cold front Makings its presence felt. The clear skies will give way to denser cloud cover, and every now and then, showers and thunderstorms will pass through. However, fear not, for there's no risk of severe weather.
Chilly, Windy, and Unsettled - The Pentecost Forecast
This unsettled weather pattern will persist into the weekend. Low-pressure systems will repeatedly bring rain or showers, with brief thunderstorms also possible. Temperatures will drop slightly, with only the eastern part of the country reaching the 20-degree mark on Sunday. "We're looking at a chilly, windy, and unsettled weekend," summarizes the meteorologist. The weather will brighten up on Pentecost Monday.
