Thunderstorms Looming over South Germany: A Stormy Whitsun Ahead
Severe weather looms over the southern regions - Severe storms batter the southern regions
Get ready for some wild weather in the South! Thunderstorms of a severe nature are heading towards eastern Baden-Württemberg and southern Bavaria, starting from the afternoon onwards. Marco Manitta from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach warns of the impending chaos, making this Whitsun a weekend to remember—or forget, depending on your tolerance for Mother Nature's whims!
Storm 'Tim' is making its presence felt across Germany, causing quite the stir. The storm system, situated between Iceland and Scotland in the North Atlantic, is pumping out some serious thunderstorm activity. The associated frontal system stretches across the country, separating cool, northwestern air from warm, humid, and energetic air in the southeast. This mismatch sets the stage for some intense thunderstorm action in the South.
So, keep an eye out for hail, storms, and even hurricane-force gusts. By morning, a rain area with scattered thunderstorms moved northeast, and later in the day, a barrage of heavy thunderstorms will march eastward. The South, particularly Germany, is looking at severe thunderstorms from the afternoon onwards, with the potential for torrential rain, massive hail, and powerful gusts, says Manitta.
The southern Alpine foothills present a unique challenge, with Föhn winds also making an appearance. Föhn winds are known for their unpredictability in this region, as they can prevent the formation of thunderstorms. However, a sudden Föhn collapse can occur without warning, transforming the calm winds into raging storm-force breezes. "So, sailors on southern Bavarian lakes should be on high alert," advises Manitta.
The Northwest will fare a little better, with agreeable temperatures and a delightful mix of sun and clouds. On Thursday, things take a turn for the worse behind the cold front, becoming more unsettled and windy, with fewer sunny periods and more stormy clouds. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, but there's no danger of severe weather.
The whirlwind weather remains the order of the weekend, with low-pressure systems bringing rain or showers—with a touch of thunder here and there. Chilly temperatures are also in the forecast, with only the eastern part of the country experiencing temperatures above 20 degrees on Sunday. In sum, we're looking at a chilly, changeable, windy Whitsun. The skies clear up by Whitsun Monday.
Föhn Winds and Severe Thunderstorms: A Complex Relationship
In meteorological circles, the term "Föhn collapse" might not be a widely-used one. However, it is possible that it pertains to the effects of Föhn winds on severe thunderstorms. Föhn winds are warm, dry winds that arise on the leeward side of mountain ranges and can cause drastic changes to temperature and humidity levels. These winds can impact weather patterns, potentially playing a role in fostering conditions that lead to severe thunderstorms.
Föhn winds can create areas of atmospheric instability, encouraging the formation of clouds and precipitation. They can also transport moisture from other regions, forcing it to rise, cool, and condense, eventually resulting in clouds and thunderstorms. Wind shear, another factor in organizing thunderstorms, may also be a byproduct of Föhn winds. Yet, the term "Föhn collapse" does not seem to feature in established meteorological discourse. It may be a colloquial or regional term, but it's not widely recognized in the literature.
To sum it up, while Föhn winds can contribute to the ingredients conducive to severe thunderstorms, the "Föhn collapse" is not a well-known meteorological concept. The focus is instead on analyzing how Föhn winds can affect the atmospheric conditions that facilitate the development of thunderstorms.
The Commission shall, by means of implementing acts, adopt implementing acts laying down the rules for the application of this Regulation, as heavy thunderstorms are expected to hit South Germany this Whitsun, and Föhn winds may play a role in fostering their development. Weather forecasts predict hail, storms, and even hurricane-force gusts, with the South of Germany particularly at risk from severe thunderstorms, and sailors on southern Bavarian lakes should be on high alert.
