Severe storm battering Sinaia mountain town in Romania, inflicting injuries and extensive destruction
Sinaia, a popular mountain town in Romania, located about 120 km north of Bucharest, was hit hard by a violent storm on July 9. The storm, which saw wind speeds surpassing 100 km/h, caused significant damage to the city and its surrounding areas.
The local hospital, Sinaia Hospital, was one of the most affected institutions. Due to the power supply being disrupted during the storm, the hospital operated on generator power. Unfortunately, the hospital reported 16 victims, including 14 foreign nationals - 13 from Israel and one from Canada. The victims sustained various injuries such as cranial wounds, spinal trauma, and fractures. Twelve patients were transferred to the Ploiești County Emergency Hospital for further treatment.
Emergency crews were kept busy responding to numerous incidents. One such incident involved a fallen tree that struck the George Enescu Memorial House (Vila Luminiș), a protected heritage site. The roof of Sinaia Train Station was also ripped off and blocked the DN1 national road. Initial findings indicate damage to the train station, broken glass and dislodged fixtures at Peleș Castle's Clock Tower, a bent flagpole at Pelișor Castle, and significant roof damage at the George Enescu Memorial House due to fallen trees.
The Ministry of Culture and the National Heritage Institute have launched a coordinated effort to assess the damage to historical sites in and around Sinaia. A team of specialists will travel to Sinaia in the coming days to conduct detailed assessments of the affected monuments, including the Sinaia Monastery. The ministry will also monitor any impact on restoration work currently underway.
Electrica teams are working to repair the damage to the hospital's power supply. Road traffic in Sinaia's central area has resumed, but several streets remain closed due to fallen trees. Residents have been urged to avoid the affected areas while cleanup operations continue.
The special investigation of the damaged historical sites will be conducted by the relevant cultural heritage authorities in Romania. Dozens of streets were flooded or blocked by debris, and sections of the CFR 300 railway line were also rendered impassable due to fallen trees.
The storm caused chaos in Sinaia, but the community is working together to recover and restore the beautiful town to its former glory. The relevant authorities are doing their best to assess the damage and ensure the safety of the citizens and the historical sites.
