Heavy Monsoon Rains Sweep Across India

India is bracing for heavy monsoon rains over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The active monsoon trough and associated weather disturbances are causing prolonged and heavy rainfall across several states.

Southern States

Strong winds between 40-50 kmph are expected over the southern states, with heavy rainfall predicted for Jammu & Kashmir on August 13. Madhya Maharashtra will receive moderate rainfall on August 8, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in southern states like Tamil Nadu on August 8 and 9, with very heavy rainfall on August 8. Farmers and coastal communities should be cautious due to strong winds and slippery roads.

Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh

Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are forecasted to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next seven days, with Uttarakhand expected to have extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) on August 11 and 13. In Uttar Pradesh, rainfall activity is expected mainly in the eastern and western parts, with periods of heavy rainfall around August 12 and intermittent showers through early to mid-August.

The present weather pattern includes a slow-moving monsoon trough and low-pressure systems over the western Himalayan region, causing enhanced rainfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea is sustaining heavy rainfall over Uttar Pradesh and adjoining regions.

Northeastern India and Adjoining Regions

Northeastern India and adjoining sub-Himalayan regions are also experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall due to active monsoon dynamics. Very heavy rainfall is expected in Assam and Meghalaya on August 8, 12, and 13. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on August 8. Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is likely over all Northeast states from August 8 to 13.

Other Regions

Jharkhand is forecasted to receive heavy rainfall on August 8, while Chhattisgarh can expect heavy rainfall from August 11 to 13. Konkan and Goa in Maharashtra will see heavy rainfall on August 8, 12, and 13. Marathwada in Maharashtra is expected to experience heavy rainfall on August 8. Bihar is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on August 8, 12, and 13. Odisha will receive heavy rainfall on August 8 and 9. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are expected to experience heavy rainfall on August 11. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Haryana on August 11.

Delhi NCR

Delhi NCR will have light rain or drizzles during the evenings, with temperatures remaining above normal until the weekend. Humidity levels will remain high in Delhi NCR, especially during the day.

Coastal Regions

Isolated heavy rainfall is forecasted for Telangana, Rayalaseema, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and all South India from August 8 to 11. The coastal regions should remain vigilant due to the potential for strong winds and slippery roads.

Caution and Preparedness

With heavy rains expected across several states, it is important for communities to remain prepared and take necessary precautions. Farmers should closely monitor their crops and take steps to protect them from potential flooding. Coastal communities should be aware of the potential for strong winds and slippery roads and take steps to secure their properties and ensure their safety.
