In the coming days, various regions of India are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, according to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Northwest India, Central India, East India, and West India are all predicted to be affected by these active monsoon conditions, with isolated extremely heavy rains and intense lightning in some areas.
In Northwest India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over most parts, accompanied by a wet spell with thunderstorms and lightning over the western Himalayan region and many parts of the northwestern plains. Winds of 30-40 km/h are also expected in east and central India areas including northwest India.
Central India is forecast to experience extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) at isolated places, particularly over Madhya Pradesh on July 17. Thundersorms with intense cloud-to-ground lightning are expected over Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is also forecast over many central Indian locations during the next week.
East India is expected to be relatively normal overall, with light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across many parts. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in areas like Assam and Meghalaya until Sunday. Gusty winds around 30-40 km/h are expected over east India during this period.
West India is predicted to see heavy to very heavy rainfall along coastal and adjoining western areas like south Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and ghat regions of Maharashtra for the next seven days. Heavy rains are forecast in Gujarat till Wednesday, Marathwada on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Saurashtra and Kutch over the weekend. A trough at mean sea level along the coasts of south Gujarat and north Kerala is driving this heavy rainfall. Strong surface winds reaching 40-50 km/h are also likely over South Peninsular India including some western parts.
In addition, continuous light/moderate rainfall with intermittent thunderstorms and lightning is expected over the western Himalayan region and plains, and extremely heavy rainfall in some south Peninsular areas like Kerala and coastal Karnataka on select days within this timeframe.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Lakshadweep will experience light to moderate rainfall and winds from July 12-17.
Farmers are encouraged to plan their activities in line with the forecast to maximize the benefits of the rainfall. Authorities and residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay updated with local alerts and remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.
The ongoing monsoon activity is expected to strengthen further, particularly in Central and Northwest India, over the coming days. A new low-pressure system is forming over the Bay of Bengal, which may bring additional rainfall to parts of India in the coming days.
In Northwest India, the monsoon trough is near its normal position, and a cyclonic circulation over Haryana is aiding in the development of widespread rainfall over the northwestern states. The IMD has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Central and Northwest India for the next 4-5 days.
Residents in Delhi and the NCR region can expect light rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning over the next four days, with temperatures hovering around or below seasonal norms. Localised heavy rainfall is expected in the Ghat areas of Maharashtra and parts of Saurashtra.
Isolated pockets of East Assam, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam may experience discomfort due to hot and humid weather conditions despite widespread rainfall. Mizoram and Tripura can expect heavy rainfall from July 13-15, while Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will not experience heavy or very heavy rainfall during the forecast period.
Overall, the active monsoon conditions are likely to bring significant rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across India, potentially leading to localized disruptions. It is important for residents and authorities to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
