Severe heat advisory over the upcoming weekend
Heat Wave and Strong Winds Forecast for Portugal and Madeira Archipelago
A yellow weather warning has been issued for Portugal from July 24 to July 26, 2025, due to a rise in hot temperatures affecting multiple regions, particularly Lisbon and other districts such as Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the anticipated temperatures are high enough to prompt a yellow alert, signaling potentially dangerous heat waves, but not reaching the more intense orange or red warning levels. In some regions of mainland Portugal, temperatures could potentially reach or exceed 40 degrees Celsius, particularly in the interior of the southern region and the Tagus Valley.
Meanwhile, in the Madeira archipelago, maximum temperatures could hover around or even exceed 30 degrees Celsius, especially on the southern slopes and in mountainous regions. The intensification of winds in the Madeira archipelago is expected to start today, with gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour, particularly in coastal areas and mountains.
The IPMA's forecast indicates a shift in weather patterns, with an anticyclone moving towards Central Europe and a depression region between North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula affecting Portugal and the Madeira archipelago. This situation is causing hot, dry air masses to be transported over mainland Portugal from the interior of the Iberian Peninsula.
In the district of Lisbon, a yellow warning is in effect between 2 pm today and midnight on Thursday, July 24th, due to the forecast of strong winds. Along the western coast and in the highlands of mainland Portugal, the winds are expected to intensify starting today, becoming moderate to strong from the north/northwest, sometimes with gusts.
Starting Thursday, a significant rise in air temperatures is expected across most of the mainland, with the yellow warning remaining in effect between 10 am on Friday, July 26th, and 6 am on Saturday, July 26th. The winds along the western coast and in the highlands of mainland Portugal will continue to be moderate to strong from the north/northwest, sometimes with gusts.
The forecast for the Madeira archipelago also includes an increase in temperatures, with potential for temperatures to reach or exceed 30 degrees Celsius. Residents are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat and strong winds, particularly the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.
