Get Ready for a Nippy Weekend in Belo Horizonte!

If you thought those chilly mornings in Belo Horizonte were a fluke, think again! This historic capital has been buzzing with crisp winds these past couple of days, sending residents scrambling for their warmest coats since at least two years. The frigid temperatures we've been experiencing this Thursday (12th of June) aren't just a brief chill, but they're breaking this year's cold record, still within the autumn season.

The National Meteorological Institute (Inmet) confirms the record-breaking cold, with Mangabeiras neighborhood registering 8.1°C early in the morning, dropping below the previous year's lowest temperatures (8.8°C in 2023 and 9.4°C in 2024). An alert is in place for temperatures close to 10°C until Monday (16th), indicating that we're in for an icy week in BH.

According to meteorologist Anete Ferreira, this year's unexpected drop in temperature can be attributed to the neutrality of the Pacific Ocean, which has been influencing the local climate patterns. Recently, the ocean has been calm without the intrusion of hot events like El Niño or La Niña, allowing cold air masses to move freely. As a result, we can expect cold episodes interspersed with warmer periods, giving a "cold's return" sensation in BH.

The polar air mass responsible for this sudden drop has even caused frosts in interior cities like Varginha, where thermometers marked 5.4°C this morning. The cold front also moved across the central region of Minas Gerais and hit BH. As clear skies let the cold breeze in, temperatures plummet overnight and early morning, then rise during the afternoon.

So, bundle up, folks! The chill is expected to hang around in BH until at least Monday (16th of June), with Inmet forecasting minimums reaching 7°C this Friday, 8°C on Saturday, 9°C on Sunday, and 10°C on Monday, while daytime highs remain around 20-24°C.

Prepare for the weekend:

  • Friday (13th of June): 7°C minimum and 21°C maximum;
  • Saturday (14th of June): 8°C minimum and 21°C maximum;
  • Sunday (15th of June): 9°C minimum and 22°C maximum;
  • Monday (16th of June): 10°C minimum and 24°C maximum.
