Several Poudre Schools Closed Wednesday

Several schools in Northern Colorado’s Poudre School District have shut their doors on Wednesday, December 17. The closures follow safety warnings linked to powerful winds and possible power cuts by Xcel Energy. Officials stressed that student and staff wellbeing drove the decision.

Three schools—Bethke Elementary, Timnath Elementary, and Timnath Middle-High—were closed as a precaution. Xcel Energy had warned of a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in the area. Biometric screenings planned at Bethke Elementary were also called off for the day.

Red Feather Lakes Elementary, Stove Prairie Elementary, and Livermore Elementary remained closed too. High winds made travel unsafe for buses and families. All sports events and after-school activities at the affected campuses were canceled. District leaders kept a close watch on weather updates and advice from Xcel Energy. They promised to notify families and staff if more schools needed to close. For now, all other schools in the district stayed open with normal schedules. Officials acknowledged the disruption but thanked families for their understanding. They reminded residents to check Xcel Energy’s outage resources for the latest on power shutoffs.

The closures impact six schools in total, with transportation risks and power concerns as the main factors. Families can expect direct updates if further changes occur. The district continues to prioritise safety as conditions develop.
