Several novice artists set to perform on the main stage at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival in 2025
Edmonton Folk Music Festival: Ray Mitch & The Coal Miners, Stephen Wilson Jr. to Debut on Main Stage
The 2022 Edmonton Folk Music Festival has unveiled its lineup, with Ray Mitch & The Coal Miners and Stephen Wilson Jr. set to make their first appearances on the main stage. The event, scheduled for August 7-10 in Gallagher Park, will also feature return appearances from artists such as Serena Ryder, Aysanabee, Allison Russell, and Danielle Ponder.
Sixty percent of the artists on the roster are new to Edmonton. According to producer Terry Wickham, striking a balance between new and returning acts is always challenging, but he is pleased with this year's selection. The full list of performers can be found online.
The lineup also includes The Roots, Mt. Joy (who will close the festival on Sunday), The Blackburn Brothers, Charlie Cunningham, Jupiter & Okwess, Madi Diaz, Monophonics, Secondhand Dreamcar, and Taj Mahal.
Tickets for the festival will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the same price as last year's passes: $234 for a weekend pass and $109-$115 for a single-day pass. Despite paying higher fees for performers, ticket prices remain unchanged due to a reduction in the number of artists from 65 to 58.
Ticket sales are expected to be strong, but Wickham has expressed concern about wildfire smoke affecting the festival. He notes that although they have managed to handle heat, wind, and rain in the past, wildfire smoke could pose an existential threat if it interferes with the event. Poor air quality could negatively impact performers' voices, potentially forcing them to cancel their sets.
In a related development, a correction has been issued regarding an earlier error in reporting: Serena Ryder did perform at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival in 2008, contrary to a previous statement.
