Chaotic tenure of Hamburg second division coaches spans over seven years, with no less than eight managers taking charge. - Seven-year tenure, eight supervisors, assistant coaches of HSV (Hamburger SV) football club

ronic Titz, Hannes Wolf, Dieter Hecking, Daniel Thioune, Horst Hrubesch, Tim Walter, Steffen Baumgart, and Merlin Polzin—these eight men have been at the helm of Hamburg's legendary side, the Hamburger SV (HSV), during their seven-year sojourn in the 2. Bundesliga. Each brought their unique approach, successes, and setbacks, aiming to steer the once-mighty Bundesliga giant back to its rightful place.

Christian Titz (2018):Titz, a former U21 head coach, was promoted to lead the HSV after parting ways with Bernd Hollerbach. Although he could not prevent relegation from the Bundesliga after the 2017/18 season, he was given a new contract until 2020. His term ended following a 0:0 draw against VfL Bochum, as the club's leadership perceived the season's goals to be at risk. Now, Titz is coaching 1. FC Magdeburg, with promotion hopes on the horizon.

Hannes Wolf (2018-2019):Dubbed the "trainer wonderkid," Wolf, who previously led VfB Stuttgart to the Bundesliga, took over the HSV in fifth place. Six wins in seven games soon made the Hamburgers the autumn champions. However, a 0:2 defeat against Union Berlin caused their first slip out of the promotion ranks after the 31st matchday, ending the season in fourth place. The club had announced Wolf's departure even before the last matchday. Currently, he is coaching the German U20 national team.

Dieter Hecking (2019-2020):With VfL Wolfsburg DFB-Pokal victory in 2015 under his belt, the experienced trainer took the reins when Hecking was recruited to counterbalance the youthful Wolf. Despite a 2:1 victory, the HSV was relegated from the Bundesliga. Hecking's tenure ended after the team found itself in the relegation playoff spot after the 25th matchday, with the low point being a 1:5 home loss to SV Sandhausen on the last matchday. This season, Hecking is working to avoid relegation with VfL Bochum in the top tier.

Daniel Thioune (2020-2021):Through his good work at VfL Osnabrück, Thioune found himself on the candidates' list at the HSV. His stint began with a defeat in the first round of the cup against Dynamo Dresden, a third-division side. Thioune led the HSV to autumn champions but could not prevent the team from falling to eight place by the end of the season, which signaled the end of his tenure. Currently, he is responsible for second-division side Fortuna Düsseldorf, with promotion hopes still alive.

Horst Hrubesch (2021):Club legend Hrubesch, an icon with 1983 European Cup winner and 1980 European Championship double goal scorer, took charge for the last three games of the 2020/21 season. Although the team managed a fourth-place finish in their third season in the second tier, Hrubesch returned to his role heading up the club's youth development.

Tim Walter (2021), Steffen Baumgart (2021-2022), and Merlin Polzin (2022-present):Walter, Baumgart, and Polzin comprised the second half of the HSV coaching carousel in the 2. Bundesliga. Each of these coaches led the team to the relegation playoff but fell short. Walter's tenure ended with his release in February 2023, while Baumgart found new employment with Bundesliga side Union Berlin. Since February 2024, Polzin has been at the helm, leading HSV from eighth place to the top of the table with a chance of returning to the Bundesliga this Saturday night.
