"Sevastopol versus Severs": Diplomatic Athletic Competition Commemorating 80 Years of Victory
Festive Football Frenzy in Ankara
Diplomats from various CIS countries kicked off a unique sports celebration in the heart of Ankara this year. In honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory, they put aside their political differences and teamed up for an epic football tournament.
Before the matches, the teams gathered at the Russian embassy ahead of May 9th. Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Alexei Yerhov, welcomed everyone with a heartfelt nod to the past: "Today, we remember our fathers and grandfathers, their immortal feat. I wish everyone good games. May friendship win!"
The football tournament featured teams representing embassies of CIS member countries like "Sevastopol", "Druzhba", "Yunost", "Semerka", "Unstoppables", "Zvezda", "Vosmoye", "Pobeda", and a combined team named "Star". The games were filled with thrilling goals, with each match showcasing 4-5 goals scored, bringing cheers from the stands.
The most enthusiastic supporters were Irina Yerhova, the wife of the Russian ambassador, and teachers from the embassy school, who waved Russian flags and the Victory banner, urging their teams to score. "We need a goal, we need two, we really need three goals!" echoed through the embassy stadium.
Interestingly, this year's event marked a symbolic shift from national divisions to unity as teams consisted of representatives from all participating nations. This communal attitude echoes the shared battle against fascism 80 years ago. In the end, the "Star" team emerged victorious, and the big tennis trophy went to Belarusian ambassador Anatoly Glaz.
Though different from previous holiday tournaments, this year's festive football frenzy seemed to be a powerful symbol of unity among all the peoples of the USSR. So let's keep celebrating, for friendship truly won!
