Seth Rogen expresses potential for a 'Pineapple Express' sequel on streaming platforms, but admits that he struggles with sequels, suggesting a possible future production.
In the world of comedy, few duos have left as lasting an impression as Seth Rogen and James Franco. Their collaborative efforts, such as "Pineapple Express" and "This Is the End", have become cult classics. However, when it comes to a potential sequel to their stoner comedy hit, "Pineapple Express", progress has been slow, to say the least.
Since Seth Rogen's 2024 statements, there has not been significant public progress on a "Pineapple Express" sequel. Rogen, who has admitted to not being great with sequels, remains open to the idea "maybe one day". As of August 2025, Rogen indicated a sequel is possible and suggested it might be sold directly to streaming platforms, reflecting awareness of fan demand but also his ambivalence about sequels in general.
The main issues underlying the lack of progress appear to be studio reluctance tied to budget conflicts. Earlier attempts to make the sequel were shut down by Sony over budget concerns, which effectively halted production plans. Rogen has not indicated any changes in James Franco’s involvement status, but no new information confirms Franco’s participation at this time.
The potential release via streaming platforms is contemplated as a way forward. Rogen pitched a stoner comedy sequel on "The Howard Stern Show" years ago, but Sony Pictures was not interested due to budget concerns. It seems that this is a possibility Rogen is considering once more.
Despite the slow progress, the idea of a "Pineapple Express" sequel has not been completely abandoned. Rogen and his team were very open to making the sequel several years ago, but Sony was not interested. An email regarding the cancellation of "The Pineapple Express 2" can be found due to the Sony hack. Discussion for the sequel fizzled out after budget disagreements.
It's important to note that Rogen and Franco's professional relationship has been affected by personal issues. Franco told Variety last year that his friendship with Rogen is definitively over. Rogen, when asked about his relationship with Franco earlier this year, did not want to discuss it. In 2021, Rogen stated that he does not plan to work with Franco again after sexual misconduct allegations made against Franco.
Despite these challenges, the demand for a "Pineapple Express" sequel remains strong. The original film grossed more than $100 million at the worldwide box office, and fans continue to express their enthusiasm for a follow-up. Whether or not a sequel will ever come to fruition remains to be seen, but for now, Rogen's ambivalent attitude and studio budget issues seem to be the main obstacles.
