Serial Renovations: The Fast, Scalable Solution for Multi-Family Housing Energy Efficiency
Serial renovations are emerging as a swift, scalable, and affordable solution for multi-family housing, with potential to revolutionise the building sector's approach to energy efficiency. Corinna Enders, Chair of the German Energy Agency's Executive Board, emphasises the importance of reducing demand through greater efficiency to meet climate targets.
Serial renovations, involving the simultaneous refurbishment of multiple buildings, have seen a significant reduction in construction times. Originally taking 14 weeks, these times have been halved to an average of seven weeks. This speed, coupled with cost reductions of around a third, makes serial renovations an attractive proposition.
The German Energy Agency (dena) highlights project size and repetition effects as key factors driving these cost reductions. The organisation, known as Agora Energiewende, views reliable funding as crucial for serial renovations to reach a mass market and fully realise their potential. Corinna Enders, dena's Chair, underscores the need for financial support to facilitate the widespread adoption of this method.
Serial renovations offer a fast, cost-effective, and scalable solution for improving energy efficiency in multi-family housing. With construction times halved and costs reduced by a third, this method is gaining traction. However, reliable funding is identified as a critical factor to unlock its full potential and drive widespread implementation.
