Seoul braces for record-breaking cold as temperatures plunge to -13°C

Seoul is preparing for its coldest day of the winter so far, with temperatures expected to drop sharply. The Korea Meteorological Administration has warned of a deep freeze, bringing icy conditions to the capital and surrounding areas. Residents are already feeling the chill as daytime readings stay below zero.

On January 19, Seoul's daytime temperatures remained below freezing. Along the Han River in Yeongdeungpo District, icicles formed along the banks as the weather today intensified. The city's weather service now predicts a further plunge.

By January 20, the temperature is expected to hit minus 13 degrees Celsius (8.6 degrees Fahrenheit). This would mark the lowest temperature recorded in the capital this winter. The freezing spell is unlikely to ease soon, with forecasts suggesting the cold snap will last throughout the week. The Korea Meteorological Administration continues to monitor conditions closely. No further details have been released about temperature trends beyond January 20, 2026.

The prolonged cold will keep Seoul in a deep freeze for days. Icy conditions along the Han River and freezing daytime temperatures are likely to persist. Residents should prepare for continued low readings as the week progresses.
