"Sensational departure update": HSV head Kuntz discloses reasons behind Selke's continued absence
Hamburger SV (HSV) has bid a fond farewell to one of their key players, Davie Selke, who has completed a move to İstanbul Başakşehir FK in Turkey. The German striker played a pivotal role in HSV's promotion to the Bundesliga, scoring an impressive 22 goals in the 2024/25 season.
Selke's departure from HSV was not an easy one, as he was unable to agree on a contract extension with the club. His request for a contract without an automatic extension was granted, and he chose to join Başakşehir FK.
During a Q&A session with Sports Director Stefan Kuntz, Selke's departure was one of the main topics of discussion. Kuntz praised Selke's contributions to HSV and considered him a fantastic transfer.
The meeting with the team, coaches, and management at the training camp in Herzogenaurach was well-attended, with approximately 600 HSV fans in attendance. The session included autograph sessions, photo opportunities, and a Q&A session with Kuntz.
Although Selke's departure was a significant loss for HSV, Kuntz expressed that the club still loves him. Similarly, the fans still have plenty of love for another injured player, Mario Vuskovic, who is in constant contact with HSV and often visits Hamburg.
While there is no information available about Vuskovic's current status at HSV, Kuntz looks forward to September 2026, when Vuskovic can finally play for HSV again. In the meantime, the search for a different type of player for the attack led to the signing of Yussuf Poulsen.
Poulsen has already played a few games at the highest level, according to Kuntz, and Robert Glatzel has a contract with HSV until 2027. Many fans took the opportunity to ask questions during the meeting with the team, with topics ranging from season goals to further transfers.
Despite the paths of Selke and Vuskovic developing differently, the mood among fans was positive. Only one session was closed to the public, but the openness and transparency of the meeting allowed fans to express their concerns and excitement for the future of HSV.
Selke's decision to leave Hamburger SV (HSV) for İstanbul Başakşehir FK in Turkey may have been a shift in European leagues, but his contributions to HSV's promotion to the Bundesliga were undeniable, as he scored an impressive 22 goals in the 2024/25 season. Despite his departure, both the club and fans still hold him in high regard, with the search for a new striker like Poulsen underway to fill the gap left by Selke's move.
