In a significant development, the Iraqi counterterrorism service announced a successful security operation in Syria on Friday. The operation resulted in the death of a senior Islamic State (IS) leader, Omar Abdul Qader Bassam, who held a significant position within the group, serving as the head of external operations and security.

Known by the nickname 'Abdul Rahman Al-Halabi', Omar Abdul Qader Bassam was accused of overseeing attacks in multiple countries, including the bombing of Iran's embassy in Lebanon. He was also involved in planning other operations in Europe and the United States, although these were ultimately foiled through intelligence work.

The operation, carried out in coordination with the U.S.-led international coalition, took place in Syria. However, no further details about the operation or the circumstances of the leader's death were provided.

The death of Omar Abdul Qader Bassam is believed to be a significant blow to the Islamic State group. The group is believed to be hoping to stage a comeback in Syria following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad last December.

It is worth noting that the U.S. Central Command has carried out a series of strikes targeting Islamic State figures in Syria. The operation marked another such instance in the ongoing fight against the terror group.

While the operation did not provide information about the commander of external operations and security of the Islamic State organization who was killed in a separate security operation in Syria, it underscores the international community's continued commitment to eliminating key IS leaders and disrupting their operations.
