In the heart of Germany, the city of Solingen is preparing for a significant event aimed at enhancing the lives of its senior residents. On Thursday, March 6, at 5:00 PM, the Senior Citizens' Council election will take place in the small concert hall of the Theater and Concert Hall, Konrad-Adenauer-Straße 71.

The Senior Citizens' Council serves as a vital point of contact for matters concerning the daily life of seniors in the city. Composed of at least 15 elected members, the Council includes a diverse range of organisations beyond just elected representatives. These organisations include welfare associations, the WIR e. V. Senior Citizens' Newspaper Support Association, and factions represented in the city council.

The approved candidates for the election have formed an electoral assembly, from which the 15 members for the next Senior Citizens' Council will be elected. A total of 27 candidates have been approved, with 6 women and 21 men aged between 55 and 85. To be eligible, candidates must be at least 55 years old and registered in Solingen since February 3, 2024, and must also submit supporting signatures from at least 20 eligible voters with their application documents.

The role of the Senior Citizens' Council is multifaceted. It acts as a liaison for senior-related matters in the city, ensuring that the voices and concerns of its senior residents are heard and addressed. Following the election, the inaugural meeting for the new Council will take place on Tuesday, April 2.
