Senators Aagesen, Marlaska, and Robles called upon for immediate clarifications regarding fire management in the Senate
Spain's Forest Fire Management Under Scrutiny
The People's Party (PP) has raised concerns about Spain's forest fire prevention measures, alleging a significant deficit in this area, according to the European Court of Auditors. This criticism comes amidst the ongoing wildfire crisis, with more than 340,000 hectares burned in Spain so far in August.
Elías Bendodo, the vicesecretary of Autonomous Policy and Municipalities of the PP, has accused the central government of being passive, waiting for regional executives to request resources instead of offering them. He also criticised the Executive for leaving autonomous communities "alone in the face of the crisis".
The PP intends to urgently summon the Third Vice President and Minister of Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, and the Ministers of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and Defense, Margarita Robles, to request explanations for the management of forest fires in Spain. The summons is scheduled to take place before August 31.
Bendodo has highlighted several mistakes made by the Pedro Sánchez government, including a "lack of foresight, planning, and investment". He also rejected attributing the cause of the fires solely to climate change, stating that "I won't deny climate change, but the majority of these fires have been caused by humans".
The PP accuses the Executive of not being close to or by the side of the parties affected by the fires, and of not approving the declaration of the disaster area until next week. They also regret that the European funds dedicated to forest management have not been executed.
In addition, Bendodo accused the government of "lack of truth" because, according to him, all resources are not deployed as the government claims. He maintains that what is needed is "will" on the part of the Executive, not waiting for aid requests.
The PP in the Senate has announced the activation of the month of August in the Upper Chamber, with the intention of addressing the ongoing forest fire crisis and the government's management of it. However, the search results do not provide specific names of the people from the Spanish government ministries of Internal Security, Defense, and Ecological Transition who were requested by the PP in the Senate to report on the management of the summer 2021 wildfires in Spain.
The PP accuses the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, of being absent and arriving late due to legal problems. Bendodo lamented that Sánchez "thinks everything can be solved with ideology" and that when he faces a problem, "he comes up with a national plan".
Despite the criticisms, the government has yet to respond publicly to the allegations and summons issued by the PP. The ongoing wildfire crisis in Spain continues to pose a significant challenge to the government and the country's forest management efforts.
