Senator from Mexico intends to travel to Palestine with the intention of rescuing abandoned children.
In a bold humanitarian move, Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña of Mexico has proposed a plan to rescue Palestinian children orphaned by the ongoing conflict and provide them with refuge in Mexico. This initiative is inspired by Mexico’s historical precedent under President Lázaro Cárdenas, who took in over 450 child refugees during the Spanish Civil War.
The plan received an official invitation from the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Relations, inviting Senator Fernández Noroña to visit Palestine to coordinate these efforts, meet with Palestinian authorities, and visit refugee camps.
The senator's proposal has legislative backing from the Mexican Senate, with a bill aimed at granting asylum to minors orphaned due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The bill has received endorsement from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who framed it as a humanitarian act reflecting Mexico’s historical openness to child refugees.
Mexico's diplomatic position supports a two-state solution and has condemned Israeli military tactics such as the use of hunger as a weapon of war, showing political alignment with Palestinian solidarity at the United Nations. Fernández Noroña’s proposal and planned visit represent a concrete follow-up to Mexico’s diplomatic stance by offering direct humanitarian aid through asylum.
The Mexican government has suggested considering a special program to oversee these cases, with each case formally reviewed. The Permanent Congressional Commission has also issued a proclamation declaring Justice for Palestine as an urgent and requisite objective of the current times.
At the United Nations' Two-State Solution Conference on July 30, Mexico’s U.N. Ambassador Héctor Vasconcelos voiced support for recognition of Palestine as a member state and called for an end of Israeli occupation. He also urged taking action to educate Israeli and Palestinian children about commonalities between the two cultures.
This plan is progressing as a humanitarian response aligned with Mexico’s historic commitment to refugee children and current political advocacy for Palestinian rights. It serves as a testament to Mexico's continued commitment to promoting peace and justice in the world.
