David Perdue: Stacey Abrams? She Don't Give a Hoot About Georgia, Aiming for White House Stepping Stone
Senator David Perdue formally appointed as President Trump's chief China negotiator following crucial Senate approval vote
Grabbing a microphone for a swift chat about Georgia's gubernatorial race.
The forceful candidate for Georgia's gubernatorial seat, David Perdue, donned his diplomat hat this week, as the Senate confirmed him as President Donald Trump's ambassador to China with a solid 67-29 vote.
With a pedigree in business, from heading companies like Tennessee-based Dollar General to handling global supply chains, including significant experiences in Beijing, Perdue has always been a close confidante of the president.
Monday evening, Perdue managed to rally enough votes (64-27) to pass the critical cloture vote, effectively ending major debate on his nomination.
Rewind a bit to 2021, when Perdue locked horns with Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., in a runoff election, only to lose by a razor-thin margin—just over 1%, or roughly 55,000 votes. Even during his 2022 quest to knock out Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in the Republican primary, despite receiving a presidential endorsement, Perdue came up short.
David Perdue, Trump's pal and now-confirmed China ambassador, sets sights on China
We here at our website Digital reached out to Ossoff looking for his thoughts on his old foe's confirmation.
During his confirmation hearing, Perdue didn't pull any punches, stating that China's global ambitions pose a threat to the world order. He claimed that since 2000, China has doubled its nuclear arsenal and boosted its military at a rate not seen since World War II. He also pointed to China's actions in the South China Sea and their Hong Kong agreement violations.
"China's Social Credit Score system and excessive surveillance tactics are tools for domestic control," Perdue said, adding that their Belt and Road Initiative and vision for "Made in China 2025" demonstrate their aggressive global ventures.
"They speak of a worldwide 'community of common destiny for all mankind.' Essentially, they want a world aligned with their authoritarian principles," Perdue stated.
Perdue further argued that Trump's "America First" approach to China is not isolationist but, in fact, the exact opposite.
"America will be a stronger ally and partner by rebuilding our strategic supply chains here and with our buddies," he declared. Perdue continued, stating that Chinese President Xi Jinping, like Trump, understands only strength. If confirmed, Perdue promised to work on reciprocal and security agreements with Beijing.
How Perdue plans to deal with China: Strength, Reciprocity and Security
"Our approach to China should be nuanced, nonpartisan, and strategic," Perdue emphasized.
On Taiwan, Perdue noted that he supports the longstanding "One China" policy while remaining committed to a peaceful resolution suitable for both Beijing and Taipei. Additionally, he pledged to keep focus on eliminating fentanyl precursors and holding China accountable for human rights violations.
The Senate also recently approved former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as the U.S. ambassador to Israel. Later on Tuesday, three more Trump-affiliated diplomatic nominees are set for cloture votes and likely confirmations, including:
- Tom Barrack, a former Reagan staffer and real estate investor, seeking an ambassadorship to Turkey.
- Tilman Fertitta, owner of Landry's Restaurants and the Houston Rockets, eyeing the ambassador role for Italy and San Marino.
- Warren Stephens, an Arkansas billionaire banker, with his sights set on becoming the U.S.' top diplomat to the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
