Colombian Senator and Presidential Candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay Assassinated
In a shocking turn of events, Miguel Uribe Turbay, a senator and conservative presidential pre-candidate for the 2026 election, was assassinated on Monday. Uribe's death was the result of an attack on June 7 during a campaign event in Fontibón, on the outskirts of Bogotá.
Uribe, known as a combative figure and a symbol of the renewal of the Colombian right, spent over two months in critical condition and underwent multiple surgeries before succumbing to his injuries. The Colombian government has announced that it will investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
The attack raised serious concerns about political violence and security for candidates in Colombia. Authorities arrested a minor who appeared to be a paid hitman and considered him the material perpetrator in a broader conspiracy involving accomplices and organizers yet to be fully identified.
Political leaders around the world have expressed their condolences and regret over Uribe's death. Santiago Abascal, the president of Vox, described Uribe as having been "assassinated" for "defending Colombia and freedom" and "standing up to" the "terrorist" and "lackey of Nicolás Maduro who currently presides" over the country. Inigo Urkullu, the leader of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), and the Spanish People's Party (PP) have also expressed their regret.
In a message, Abascal conveyed his deepest condolences to Uribe's family and the Colombian people, expressing confidence that the country "will move forward". The Basque regional government has announced that it will lower the flags to half-mast in honor of Uribe. The PP has announced that it will hold a minute of silence in the Congress of Deputies in memory of Uribe.
