Senate unanimously endorses National Memorial Day honoring Charlie Kirk

Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and close ally of President Donald Trump, was tragically shot and killed on September 10, 2025, during a college event in Utah. The shooting, which occurred from a rooftop, is being investigated as a political assassination.

Immediately before the shooting, Kirk was taking questions from an audience member about mass shootings and gun violence, as he was participating in a debate. Reports suggest that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who has been charged with aggravated murder, allegedly spent more than a week planning the attack on Kirk, a devout husband, father, and friend.

The public memorial service for Kirk took place on Sunday, September 21, 2025, in a football stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where up to 73,000 attendees, including US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, gathered under high security to honour him.

Sen. Rick Scott called for the passage of the resolution on Thursday, and the United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution designating Oct. 14, 2025, as a National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk. Kirk is credited with energizing the Republican youth movement and helping Donald Trump win back the White House in 2024.

No new information about Robinson's motive or the investigation has been provided at this time. The funeral service for Kirk will take place at 2 p.m. ET. The shooting location and the immediate events leading up to the shooting remain undisclosed.

As the investigation continues, the nation mourns the loss of a respected figure in American politics and a beloved family man.
