In the heart of Siberia, the Viluy River, a tributary of the mighty Lena, offers a serene and captivating fishing experience. This river is home to a variety of cold-water fish species, including the prized Taimen (Hucho taimen), Lenok (Brachymystax lenok), Grayling (Thymallus spp.), Northern Pike (Esox lucius), and various species of Whitefish.

For Semen Glukharev, a representative of Suntarsky District, fishing is more than just a pastime; it's a meditative journey that allows him to communicate directly with nature. He has been an avid fisherman since his childhood in Viluchan, a town nestled along the Viluy.

The fishing seasons in the Viluy River, like many Siberian rivers, are largely influenced by ice melt and fish life cycles. Taimen, a formidable predator, can be found in the Viluy from mid-August, while other species like Grayling and Lenok follow a similar seasonal pattern, aligning with the open water months.

However, for precise seasonal timing or a comprehensive species list, consulting regional fishing guides, local fisheries agencies, or scientific studies on the Viluy River ecosystem would be necessary.

Semen's favourite way to prepare Taimen is by baking it after rubbing it with salt. This method allows the scales to fall off, resulting in a delicious dish. His favourite fish soup, on the other hand, is made by boiling Taimen and Lenok heads together.

The rivers that flow into the Viluy provide a valuable source of fish for the local community. While Taimen is a prized catch, other common species like Perch, Pike, Roach, Sterlet, and Peled (Baranatta) are also commonly caught. Interestingly, few people in Viluchan eat Pike, mostly for sport.

Fishing is not just a solitary activity for Semen. He is an active member of a social media group where fishers from Viluy share their experiences and catch of the day. The release of water from the hydroelectric power station can cause fish to move or hide, adding an element of unpredictability to each fishing trip.

Despite the excitement of catching a big or small fish, Semen believes there is no better fish soup or salted fish. He enjoys baking Perch for breakfast and finds fishing to be a form of relaxation and competition.

However, it's important to note that fines are imposed for catching Sterlet and Peled (Baranatta) in the Viluy. These species are protected due to their importance in the local ecosystem.

So, whether you're a seasoned angler or a curious novice, the Viluy River offers a unique and rewarding fishing experience amidst the breathtaking Siberian landscapes.
