Seligenstadt’s Historic Carillon Still Chimes After Six Decades of Tradition

Seligenstadt’s town hall tower carillon has been a daily presence for decades. Installed in 1965, it marks the hours with melodies and chimes from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The instrument also takes centre stage during the Christmas season, filling the streets with festive tunes.

The carillon was built in the early 1960s by master clockmaker Albert Burghardt. He designed six music cylinders, two of which play exclusively during Advent. Dutch firm Petit & Fritsen completed the final construction before selling it to the town in 1965.

The carillon remains a defining feature of Seligenstadt’s cultural heritage. Its daily melodies and seasonal carols continue to shape the town’s atmosphere. The instrument’s blend of tradition and craftsmanship ensures its place in local life for years to come.
