Seizure of Firearms, Bullets, and Narcotics at Lagos Port by Nigerian Customs Officials
At the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made a significant seizure of prohibited items valued at approximately N10 billion.
In a disclosure to journalists, the Comptroller General of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, announced the seizure of 16 containers filled with illicit goods. Among the seized items were two pump-action rifles, 25 cartridges of ammunition, a Smith & Wesson pistol with 55 rounds, and 202 cans of Colorado Loud, a Canadian strain of cannabis.
Initially deemed clean, the container numbered MRSU6407089 was subjected to a secondary search following intelligence reports of contraband items. The NCS directed the use of scanners to thoroughly inspect all 16 containers, confirming the presence of the illicit goods.
The consignee of this container is Mr. Babatunde Ogidiolu of a Lagos address. The container also contained other items such as military gear, fake drugs, and expired food items, particularly margarine.
Another container, FBIU5507953, was seized containing 1,290 sacks of frozen chicken. Meanwhile, a container, number OERU4243517, was seized containing 1,290 sacks of frozen poultry products.
The NCS has also seized three containers of absolutely prohibited used clothing and seven containers of expired drugs and prohibited medicaments. One container, number ZZSU7277511, was seized with 305 cartons of toothpaste concealed with beads and a Jalabiya dress, infringing intellectual property rights.
Two containers of expired chest and lung tablets without NAFDAC registration number were also seized. The NCS has been deploying tools, technology, and intelligence to balance their mandates, ensuring the interdiction of arms, ammunition, fake drugs, and other prohibited items at the Lagos Port.
The latest update is that the NCS has seized containers linked to the owners of previous seized containers, indicating a concerted effort to tackle the issue of smuggling. The seizure highlights significant interdiction efforts by the NCS against arms, ammunition, fake drugs, and other prohibited items at the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa.
