Seizure of Counterfeit Merchandise from Popular Bangkok Mall Retail Shops
A 48-year-old Chinese chap, Yang Jin, was cuffed this week for peddling phony branded merchandise from a store in a shopping mall near Bangkok's Pratunam intersection. Although police didn't formally confirm the location, locals suspect it's the colossal Platinum Mall.
During a raid on Sunday, more than 27,000 counterfeit items were confiscated, including fashion goods like clothing and bags, bling like jewelry, nibbles, watches, and accessories adorned with phony labels. According to authorities, the merchandise bore counterfeit trademarks and were illegally imported from China.
Yang Jin fessed up to being the store's owner and admitted that he and a Chinese buddy had conspired to smuggle these goods into Thailand for a profit. He's been charged with hawking goods with counterfeit trademarks that belong to others in the kingdom. The legal tussle is ongoing, as reported by Pol Maj Gen Thatphum Jaruphat.
Interestingly, this isn't the first time Thailand has encountered issues with counterfeit goods, especially from China. In April 2025, another raid targeted Chinese food products in Bangkok, but it seems unrelated to this case.
- Yang Jin, the 48-year-old Chinese man arrested for selling counterfeit merchandise in a shopping mall near Pratunam intersection, confessed to smuggling the goods into Thailand with a compatriot, as detailed by Pol Maj Gen Thatphum Jaruphat in general-news reporting on crime and justice.
- The Platinum Mall, a colossal shopping center suspected to be the location of the store run by Yang Jin, saw a raid on Sunday that led to the seizure of over 27,000 counterfeit items, including fashion, jewelry, food, watches, and accessories, all bearing illegal, smuggled trademarks from China.
- The suppression of such counterfeit activities is a recurring issue in Thailand, as exhibited by the raid in April 2025 targeting Chinese food products in Bangkok, although that incident appears unrelated to the current case involving Yang Jin.
