An Existential Melancholy: Walter Sittler's Unconventional Journey in ARD Comedy

Unexpected Romance Unveiled: Walter Sittler in a Humorous ARD Production - Seeking death, discovering love:

Nighttime shrouds the atmosphere in solemnity, as the disheartened ex-librarian Hermann Weber (Walter Sittler) begins to spin a yarn to the somber book club attendees huddled by the fireplace.

The Solitary Misanthrope

Cloaked in apathy, Hermann himself spurns active participation in society, labeling it as the descent into a cultural abyss. This despondency intensifies when a dim cancer prognosis blankets his horizon, cavalierly shrugging off any treatment options, reminiscing about his deceased wife from three decades past.

However, fate doesn't adhere to the ailing man's dire predictions. "Dying is No Solution Either," a poignantly humorous drama produced in 2023, slated to air at 8:15 PM on the First channel, dramatically proves otherwise.

Hermann's desperate plea to euthanasia organizations within Switzerland elicits no response, nor is the mercy of morphine pills granted. The widower's isolation deepens, as he finds himself estranged from his long-lost daughter and grandson.

The Solitary One's Redemption

This desolate landscape drastically changes when a vibrant newcomer named Hanne (Andrea Sawatzki) graces the reading circle with her presence. Endowed with flaming red hair and a surreal aspect, she delivers a seemingly insignificant novel to Hermann pertaining to a woman who has entombed all her husbands, treading on their inheritances.

Assuming Hanne crafted the book itself, Hermann tenuously attempts to forge a connection with her, coveting her fate as his own. Predictably, his endeavor goes unrewarded.

Director Ingo Rasper ("Love is Unpredictable") deftly orchestrates a tale of rediscovering life in this production, lacing it with sparkling dialogue and befitting visual imagery (Book: Matthias Lehmann). It's steeped in stuttered apologies, doses of humor, and even culminates in a revolutionary dance night.

The film radiates warmth through its subtle humor, entwined with modest piano melodies. Furthermore, the harmonious reunion between the brooding grandfather and his 15-year-old grandson is meticulously crafted, after they realized their shared indifference and mutual inability to connect.

Walter Sittler ("The Inspector and the Lake") delivers a striking performance as a tightly-wound grouch, his wild hair and deep-set eyes gleaming with a bookish fervor as he dismissively boasts about his fictitious opulence. In stark contrast stands Andrea Sawatzki ("The Bundschuh Family"), vibrant and full of life, flaunting her vivaciousness with colorful clothes and an enchanting mint green Citroën DS. Yet, Hanne doesn't err on the side of villainy, and Hermann's character deviates from deceitfulness. The tale unfolds as testament to the fact that life is not soap opera material, and fortunately, this beautiful film follows suit.

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, perhaps considering Hermann's occupation as a former librarian and his near-constant absorption of books. Hermann, much like the characters he creates stories about, navigates through the dark drama of his life, somewhat reminiscent of the melancholy depicted in movies-and-tv entertainment. Despite his dying cancer diagnosis, and his earlier unwillingness to seek conventional treatments, Hermann experiences a surprising turn of events, as he finds life-changing redemption, mirroring the narrative of the movie "Dying is No Solution Ever," produced in 2023 for broadcast on ARD First channel. credits go to the director Ingo Rasper for weaving this tale in Berlin, touched with humor and heartwarming reunions, proof that life is not always the unpredictable tragedy it seems.
