Leonore Gewessler Announced as New Leader of the Green Party

In a press conference held in the Vienna Volksgarten, Leonore Gewessler has officially announced her intentions to succeed Werner Kogler as the leader of the Green Party. Gewessler, who was presented as a newcomer six years ago, expressed great humility in taking on this new role.

Gewessler's goal is to make the Green Party's ideas more understandable to the public and to take over the leadership of the parliamentary club if elected as federal speaker at the Green Federal Congress. She emphasized that the Green Party will continue to be a climate protection party under her leadership, with a deep conviction to ensure that future generations have it better than the current one.

The unstable world situation is a motivation for Gewessler to engage at the top of the Greens. She stressed the importance of security policy as one of the central topics, stating that humanity and order are the Green Party's basic principles.

Gewessler's approach to the Lobau Tunnel issue has been controversial, with the FPO threatening to file a ministerial complaint against her. However, Gewessler has spoken of a "billion-dollar grave" in relation to the Lobau Tunnel, and has shown that the Greens, under her leadership, do not submit to blackmail, whether from US President Donald Trump with tariffs or Russian President Vladimir Putin with gas.

In terms of women's policy, Gewessler views it as an important issue, with equal emphasis on independent decisions about work hours. She also wants to make changes in the Green Party, focusing on addressing new challenges.

Gewessler did not elaborate on the far-right chancellor who narrowly prevented from taking power, but she believes that hopelessness does not make a single life better and that fighting for a better world is necessary. Meanwhile, SPÖ's Hanke wants to bring calm to the discussion about the Lobau Tunnel.

The current government's program with the FPO is continuing, and the Green Party sees itself as a constructive opposition. Gewessler approaches the task of succeeding Werner Kogler with great humility, and it remains to be seen what specific changes she plans to make in the Green Party. However, one thing is certain: under Leonore Gewessler's leadership, the Green Party will continue to be a strong voice for climate protection and a better future for all.
