Seeking a formula for victory as they navigate in the wake of their distinguished neighbors, Espanyol pursue a successful strategy.
Tyrhys Dolan Joins Espanyol Amidst Exciting Start to the Season
After five successful years at Blackburn Rovers, Tyrhys Dolan has made a move to Real Club Deportivo Espanyol de Barcelona. The 23-year-old forward, who averaged over 40 games per season for Blackburn, has joined the Spanish club on a free transfer.
Espanyol have started the season impressively, winning three and drawing one of their opening four matches. This form has placed them third in the La Liga standings, a position they share with Barcelona. Notably, their entire midfield against Atletico on the opening day of the season was comprised of local Catalan players.
The ownership of Espanyol underwent a change in July 2021, with the Rastar Group, led by Chinese businessman Chen Yansheng, taking the majority stake. Meanwhile, Velocity Sports Limited also holds a significant share in the club, having taken over the majority shareholding, a deal yet to be formally ratified. Another minority investor in the club is Alan Pace, a 57-year-old Californian.
Tyrhys Dolan's journey in football has been marked by personal tragedy. He played at Manchester City with his late friend Jeremy Wisten, who passed away due to suicide in 2020. However, Dolan found solace in his football, being named player of the year in 2024/25 at Blackburn Rovers.
Coach Manolo Gonzalez, who started out as a bus driver and coaching part-time teams, has instilled a compact, hardworking, fast-transitioning, and defensively sound 4-2-3-1 formation at Espanyol. Under his guidance, Espanyol won promotion via the play-offs in their first season down and finished 14th last season, despite a difficult end to the season.
The departure of defender Eric Bailly to Villarreal due to financial reasons has left a gap in the team, but Dolan has stepped up to fill the void. He has played every game so far for Espanyol and made two assists in Monday's 3-2 win against Mallorca.
Espanyol boasts a modern 41,000-seater stadium, and the atmosphere at games is far more passionate than for most Barca games. However, the club has faced financial constraints, leading to the sale of several players from their youth system to wealthier rivals.
Dolan will make his debut at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid on Saturday, a challenging but exciting prospect for the young forward. His arrival at Espanyol, along with their impressive start to the season, promises an exciting chapter for the club.
