Marcel Seegert Makes a New Leap in His Career with Transfer to SSV Ulm
Marcel Seegert, a central defender and former captain of SV Waldhof Mannheim, has made a move to SSV Ulm in the 3. Liga. The 31-year-old native of Mannheim, who spent a significant part of his career with his hometown club, has decided to seek a new sporting challenge.
Seegert's decision to leave SV Waldhof Mannheim was not an easy one, but he felt it was the right step for him. The club honoured his wish and facilitated the transfer to league rivals SSV Ulm.
The signing of Seegert by SSV Ulm was a quick reaction to the long-term absence of their captain Johannes Reichert, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury. The club expects Seegert to strengthen their defense immediately and compensate for the loss of Reichert.
Seegert played 315 competitive games for SV Waldhof Mannheim, including 177 games in the 3. Liga since their promotion in 2019. He served as captain since 2020 and was a key player for the club.
Markus Thiele, managing director of SSV Ulm, explained the signing of Seegert, highlighting his extensive 3. Liga experience and ability to strengthen their defense.
Gerhard Zuber, sporting director of SV Waldhof Mannheim, acknowledged the challenge of letting go of such an important figure but supported Seegert's decision, wishing him all the best and hoping to see him at the club again—whether as a player or spectator.
Seegert signed a contract with SSV Ulm running until 2027. This transfer illustrates a professional and personal crossroad for Seegert, moving from a loyal hometown role to seek fresh opportunities at a fellow 3. Liga club while also addressing Ulm’s defensive needs due to injury.
Seegert began his youth career at SV Waldhof and returned to Mannheim’s professional team in 2013 after spells at TSG Hoffenheim and FSV Mainz 05 U19. He spent three years at SV Waldhof, then played in the 2. Bundesliga with SV Sandhausen before returning to Waldhof in 2019. Since then, he helped Waldhof achieve promotion to the 3. Liga.
