Security personnel transfer PR specialist Yaroslav Shchirshikov to strictest cell
Jailbird Jaroslava Shirshikova, convicted of justifying terrorism, was transferred from the Ekaterinburg IK-2 to the IK-13 in Nižnij Tagil, aka "Red Duck." Known for housing ex-law enforcement, this joint educational and production facility is notorious for its stringent living conditions.
Shirshikova claims the transfer thwarted his plans for an eye operation. "Within two months in the PCT (closed-type cell), they added six more months in the EPKT (joint educational and production cell) and shipped me to Nižnij Tagil," he wrote on his personal Telegram channel "Gusarskaya Bravada."
Shirshikova hopes to negotiate with the prison administration to arrange the operation. "I risk being a hideous monster for the rest of my life due to the rapid shrinkage of my eye socket," he added.
Living Conditions in Russian Penal Colonies
Russian penal colonies, or corrective labor colonies, come with a range of living conditions. Prisoners are allowed to work during the day and return to their quarters at night. Conditions can be tough, with overcrowding, limited access to medical care, and strict discipline.
EPKT Units
EPKT units, part of the Russian penal system, focus on rehabilitating prisoners through education and work. While these units offer improvements through education and training, living conditions can still be demanding due to the general constraints of the penal system.
According to the press office of the GU FSIN for the Sverdlovsk region, medical care for the inmate is provided fully in accordance with existing medical support standards.
Red Duck: A Shady Settlement
It appears that "Red Duck" isn't a widely known or documented Russian penal colony. It might be a misnomer, not well-known, or there may be confusion with another facility. However, here is general information about the living conditions in Russian penal colonies, especially those with EPKT units.
Jaroslava Shirshikova was convicted of justifying terrorism in October 2024 due to a post in social media where he expressed support for the murder of military commander Vladlen Tatarinov. Later, he admitted his wrongdoing and expressed remorse. In October 2024, the court extended his sentence to five years. Following this, his PR representative asked the plenipotentiary representative of the President in the Ural Federal District, Artem Zhog, to remove him from the list of prisoners exchangeable between Russia and the USA, stating he wished to remain in his homeland "even in the hardest times."
