Security guard previously employed by Miami Heat admits guilt for theft and subsequent sale of multi-million-dollar worth of team memorabilia items.

In a shocking turn of events, Marcos Tomas Perez, a retired 25-year officer for the City of Miami Police Department and former security officer for the Miami Heat, pleaded guilty to transporting and transferring millions of dollars' worth of stolen team memorabilia in August 2025.

Over a period of approximately three years, Perez admitted to stealing over 400 game-worn jerseys and other valuable items from the Miami Heat's secured equipment room. He then sold more than 100 of these items, earning around $1.9 to $2 million.

Notable Items Stolen and Sold

One of the most notable items stolen and sold by Perez was a LeBron James jersey from Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals. Perez sold it for approximately $100,000, but that same jersey was later resold at a Sotheby’s auction in 2023 for about $3.7 million.

The stolen memorabilia were intended for a future Miami Heat museum, but Perez accessed the secured room multiple times and stole the items.

Cooperation with the Government

Perez, who worked for the Miami Heat from 2016 to 2021 and later for the league from 2022 to 2025, has cooperated with the government, which may lead to a reduced sentence. He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 31, 2025, and faces a statutory maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Recent Developments

In April, law enforcement recovered close to 300 more game-worn jerseys and memorabilia from Perez's residence. Perez admitted to the facts of the case during the hearing. His lawyer, Buschel, stated that he hopes the judge will consider Perez's history as a good person and exemplary police officer.

The Heat confirmed that the recovered items were taken from the arena, but declined to comment on the case. Perez later sold the stolen items to online brokers.

Conclusion

The case of Marcos Tomas Perez involves the theft and interstate sale of hundreds of valuable NBA game-worn jerseys and memorabilia, totaling nearly $2 million, with the LeBron James Finals jersey being the highest-profile item involved. The legal process is ongoing with a sentencing hearing set later this year.
