An altercation during a health inspection of an ice cream cart in Gelsenkirchen's Horst district took a shocking turn as a 64-year-old vendor wielded a knife, inflicting severe injuries on one inspector and minor wounds on the other.

Two diligent city inspectors, aged 32 and 37, were in the midst of a routine check-up of the ice cream cart hidden in a backyard. However, the day took a disastrous turn as a dispute emerged with the cart owner. According to investigators, the man unexpectedly produced a knife, leaving the 37-year-old inspector seriously injured, while her 32-year-old colleague sustained only minor injuries and alerted the authorities.

Local authorities were left in disbelief and outraged. Police president, Tim Frommeyer, stated, "This is an attack on our ranks, and we'll be investigating the incident's background with our newly formed homicide unit."

Mayor Karin Welge, too, expressed her astonishment, stating, "The attack on our employees shakes us to our core, and our thoughts are with the two victims." The rise in attacks against law enforcement personnel, which peaked in the year 2024, is a growing concern, according to the police president. Welge went on to add, "Attacking those who stand up for the security of our society attacks the rule of law as a whole."

Prior to this incident, the business had already been shut down due to unsatisfactory hygiene standards, according to reports. Incidentally, a study suggests that increased migration does not necessarily lead to a rise in the crime rate. Regardless, maintaining the sanctity of the law and order remains of utmost importance.

Media outlets such as ntv.de and gut/AFP have reported on this unprovoked act of violence.

Community policies should include strict measures to protect officers from unprovoked attacks during routine inspections, as was the case in Gelsenkirchen. The city's employment policy may need to address deficiencies in training officers to handle confrontational situations. Furthermore, it's crucial for the city to ensure all shops, including mobile ones like the offending ice cream cart, adhere to hygiene standards to prevent future incidents.
