Security guarantees for Ukraine called for by Starmer at 04:31
Summit in Anchorage Fails to Reach Agreement on Russo-Ukrainian War
The much-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, with the primary focus on the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. Despite high hopes, the summit ended without an official agreement or ceasefire.
During the meeting, Trump emphasized his goal to end the war but suggested that Ukraine must make territorial concessions to achieve peace. While no public agreement was announced, reports from Trump’s envoy claimed that the Russians made some concessions almost immediately during the talks, though this did not crystallize into a formal accord.
The summit marked a unique diplomatic setting, with the meeting taking place at a US military base. It was the first meeting between the two presidents since Trump's 2024 reelection and since the 2019 Osaka summit. This was Putin's first visit to a Western country since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and his first US visit since 2015.
The absence of an agreement reflects the complex geopolitical tensions and differing demands of Russia and Ukraine. The meeting was highly symbolic, representing a rare high-level engagement between the US and Russia amidst the conflict. However, media coverage highlighted the historic significance but underscored the disappointing lack of a breakthrough.
International Criminal Court charges against Putin for alleged war crimes remain a backdrop, although the US is no longer an ICC member. The delicate diplomatic balance moving forward is emphasized by the sensitive discussion around Ukrainian territorial concessions to Russia, a cause for concern among the people of Sloviansk.
In other developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ruled out decisions about Ukraine being made at the summit. He has warned of new Russian offensives on three front sections, including Saporizhzhia, Pokrovsk, and Novopavlivka. The Ukrainian army is currently engaged in heavy fighting with Russian units near the cities of Pokrovsk and Dobropillia.
As the situation remains unresolved, efforts continue to strengthen Ukraine's defences. The Ukrainian government is providing reinforcements to repel Russian advances, and the Ukrainian armed forces are converting agricultural planes into weapons of war for testing purposes. Lithuania plans to launch a new training program for building and operating drones for the general public and schoolchildren, aiming to strengthen the population's competencies in drone control and technology.
The Ukraine-Poland relationship is also under strain, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accusing Russia of trying to drive a wedge between Warsaw and Kyiv. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is calling for security guarantees for Ukraine ahead of the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As the diplomatic chess game continues, the people of Ukraine and their allies remain hopeful for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
