Hammering Out Peace in Gaza: The UN's Stalled Ceasefire Resolution

Security Council Imposes Truce on Gaza Conflict

At this very moment, the UN Security Council is caught in a deadlock, grappling with a draft resolution that could potentially end the relentless violence in the Gaza Strip. The big question looming ever larger: Will the resolution see the light of day, or will it falter in the face of US opposition, as expected?

The resolution, leaked by AFP in New York, calls for an "unyielding, unrestricted, and everlasting ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip, the liberation of Israeli hostages, and the removal of all barriers to the delivery of humanitarian aid, even UN aid. The urgency of this action is driven by the critical humanitarian crisis engulfing the Palestinian territory.

Sadly, diplomatic insiders have painted a dire picture; this resolution is poised to crumble under a US veto, with the United States, an ardent ally of Israel, standing in its way. The ten elected members of the Security Council who initially proposed the text appear to have faltered in their negotiations with the US. This impasse comes amidst a long history of inaction by the Security Council when it comes to the Middle East conflict, with the last resolution dating back to June 2024, following a US-backed ceasefire proposal.

Since May 19, 2025, a crippling aid embargo has been imposed on the Gaza Strip. Israel has recently eased this blockade slightly, permitting limited aid into the hermetically sealed coastal strip. However, the UN views this austere gesture as a mere drop in the ocean, insufficient to alleviate the anguish of the Palestinian populace. In the meantime, the GHF aid foundation, supported by the US and Israel, has been floundering to deliver food and medicine to the area, with soldiers from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly firing upon the centers, resulting in numerous deaths.

On Wednesday, the GHF distribution centers shut their doors. The ongoing Gaza war, ignited by Hamas' radical Islamic assault on Israel back in October 2023, has intensified international pressure on Israel to cease hostilities.
