The UN Security Council faced a crucial vote late Wednesday evening, debating a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. However, the resolution met an obstacle, as the US veto threatens to derail this plea for peace.

The proposed resolution, shared by AFP, demands an "instant, unconditional, and enduring ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip and the release of detained Israelis. Amid the dire humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory, the text also insists that Israel lifts all restrictions on aid delivery, including UN assistance.

According to sources speaking to AFP, the resolution's prospects for approval seem bleak due to the anticipated US veto. In an unfortunate stalemate, the Security Council members who plan to present the proposal have reportedly failed to negotiate with Washington, reflecting the persistent divide surrounding the Middle East conflict. It is worth noting that the Security Council has not addressed this issue since November 2024, with the last resolution dating back to June that year.

Israel's prolonged embargo on humanitarian aid to Gaza has been in place since May 19, causing increased suffering for the Palestinian population. Despite resuming limited aid deliveries to the blockaded coastal strip, Israel is subject to ongoing international pressure to put an end to the devastating conflict in Gaza. This conflict, ignited by Islamic Hamas' violence against Israel in October 2023, continues to grab global attention.

In recent days, there have been multiple reports of Israeli soldiers firing near humanitarian aid centers in the region, resulting in several casualties. These centers were forced to shut down on Wednesday, further aggravating the situation.

In the aftermath of the veto, another resolution may be presented before the UN General Assembly, where vetoes cannot be exercised. Given the widespread global support for halting the violence, it is expected to pass without difficulty.

Additional Insights:- The US vetoed a similar resolution on June 4, 2025, opposing a draft that aimed for a "permanent ceasefire" without condemning Hamas, demanding they disarm, or urging them to leave Gaza[1][2][3].- The resolution's failure in the Security Council indicates heightened divisions within the international community concerning the response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza[4].
