Security assessment in Dusseldorf's Old Town conducted by the Federal Minister of the Interior
In a significant move signifying the start of the election campaign, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser visited Düsseldorf on Monday. Accompanied by a press entourage, she met with the SPD delegation at the market square.
The focus of the visit was to discuss concepts for security in Düsseldorf's old town, initiated by MP Zanda Martens. The discussion revolved around the recent incidents on New Year's Eve and the need for improved safety measures.
During the walk through the old town, the group passed by Heinrich Heine's birthplace. The visit also included a stop at various points of interest, where Faeser received a gift package of mustard as a token of appreciation.
The visit was also attended by SPD city councilor Martin Volkenrath, Adis Selimi (SPD Bundestag candidate), and SPD mayoral candidate Fabian Zachel. Volkenrath praised the balanced security concept in Düsseldorf, stating that it has shown significant improvement. He also criticized populist reporting on New Year's Eve, stating that the police had spoken of a largely peaceful situation in Düsseldorf.
KohleG street workers, who are part of the "Safety in Düsseldorf's city center (SIDI)" project, were also present. Their work, which focuses on young men responsible for disturbances in the old town, was positively evaluated across party lines.
Security in Düsseldorf's old town has seen an improvement, according to Martin Volkenrath. Police are on duty in the old town on weekends with four-person teams. Violence problems usually increase after 2 am, but with the increased security presence, these incidents have been minimized.
The SPD has proposed a multi-stage concept for New Year's Eve celebrations. This includes a family-friendly fireworks display, control points, and sufficient staff to ensure regulations are followed. The proposal also involves expanding the "Security in the Station Environment (SiBu)" project, improving management of old clothes and paper containers, installing more waste bins, increasing personnel for waste detectives, and significantly raising fines for littering.
Nancy Faeser rejected the petition demanding a firecracker ban, stating that the majority of the population celebrates peacefully. Instead, she discussed the immediate reaction to critical situations via cameras, emphasizing the importance of swift action in maintaining safety.
The visit ended with a positive evaluation of KohleG's work and the overall safety measures in Düsseldorf's old town. The SPD delegation expressed their commitment to continuing efforts to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the city's residents and visitors.
