Mercedes Struggles Continue in Miami Grand Prix Free Practice

In the final free practice session for the Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull's Max Verstappen set the fastest time, further cementing his position as a formidable contender in this year's Formula 1 championship. However, the current championship leaders, McLaren, remain at the top of the standings.

Oscar Piastri leads the championship with 284 points, closely followed by Lando Norris with 275 points. Verstappen is third with 187 points, significantly behind the McLaren duo [1][2][5].

The Mercedes team, on the other hand, is grappling with performance issues that have been evident since the start of the season. In the final free practice session, neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton managed to set a time within the top 10, with Russell finishing tenth and Hamilton in 13th place [3][4]. Perez, driving for Red Bull, finished third, but is now six points behind Verstappen in the championship standings [6].

Hamilton's 13th place finish is his lowest position in any free practice session since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, while Russell's tenth place finish is his lowest this season. The lack of pace from the Mercedes cars in the final free practice session raises concerns for their performance in qualifying and the race [7].

Despite Mercedes' struggles, neither driver was involved in any major incidents during the session. Nico Hülkenberg, driving for Haas, finished eighth, having already placed ninth in the first free practice session on Friday [8]. Charles Leclerc came second, four tenths of a second behind Verstappen [9].

Perez's third place finish comes after his victory weekend in Azerbaijan, providing a glimmer of hope for Red Bull's championship prospects. The Miami Grand Prix qualifying and race will be crucial in determining whether Mercedes can turn their fortunes around.

Auto-racing teams, such as Mercedes, are grappling with performance issues in grand-prix racing, as shown by their lower-ranked positions in the free practice sessions for the Miami Grand Prix. In contrast, drivers like Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc, from McLaren and Ferrari respectively, have been setting impressive times in these sessions.
