Borussia Dortmund Secures Group Victory, Nabs An Extra $10 Million
Securing nearly an additional 10 million euros through the accomplishment of a solitary objective - BVB's significant financial boost
Social Media - - - - - - - Dortmund extends run in U.S Club World Cup, banking on a single goal for a cool $10 million more.
Borussia Dortmund clinched the Group Stage of the expanded Club World Cup in the States by edging out Ulsan Hyundai 1-0. With that win, the BVB pocketed an extra $10 million, a bonus for snagging the group victory. And, as if that wasn't enough, the Beatles-inspired squad had the Vice President of the United States watching their every move.
Playing in oppressive heat, Dortmund's win over Ulsan, who hadn't scored a single goal in the tournament prior to their encounter, was far from comfortable. Daniel Svensson notched the lone goal in the 36th minute that sent Borussia Dortmund to the $1 billion tournament's Round of 16. Reportedly, the team walked away with $40 million, including their participation fee.
According to Kovac, the team planned to secure a spot in the Round of 16 and succeeded. "The guys put in a decent effort considering the heat during the first half," Kovac stated. "Naturally, exhaustion crept in during the second half."
Julian Brandt and Niklas Süle sat out the game, giving various BVB substitutes a chance to shine. Unfortunately, player shortage didn't hinder Dortmund's dominance, as they controlled the game without much resistance from Ulsan, who had no hope of advancing.
Football Vance Hangs at the Club World Cup as BVB Marches Forward
Unsurprisingly, with high-profile attendees such as US Vice President JD Vance and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, substantial security measures were in place for the game. With temperatures soaring around 35 degrees Celsius, most of the BVB bench rested in Cincinnati's cabin.
New signing Jobe Bellingham was the standout player for Dortmund. Bellingham, despite missing a volley shot in the 27th minute by a whisker, set up Svensson's winning goal just ten minutes later. The squad controlled the game throughout but failed to utilize their opportunities, making the final minutes tense until the whistle blew.
After the match, the team promptly hopped back on a plane for Fort Lauderdale to prepare for the Round of 16 in just a few days.
