The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) dishes out World Championship tickets in relay events at its very own competition. In the rain-drenched streets of Guangzhou, China, the German relay teams showed a mixed bag of results. Three quartets lock in their spots for Tokyo, while two more need a do-over to make the cut.

In a thrilling finish, the German 4x100-meter relay team, boasting speedster Owen Ansah's 9.99-second speed, and two women's relay teams have secured their tickets to the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (September 13-21). In the World Relays, the team of Kevin Kranz, Owen Ansah, Yannick Wolf, and Lucas Ansah-Peprah ran second in 38.33 seconds in their heat, securing an early qualification.

The German women's 4x400-meter relay team, with Skadi Schier, Johanna Martin, Mona Meyer, and Eileen Demes in tow, also placed second, thanks to a favorable draw in 3:28.63 minutes. The women's 4x100-meter relay team, made up of Nele Jaworski, Jessica-Bianca Wessolly, Rebekka Haase, and Sophia Junk, finished third but still qualified thanks to the sixth-fastest time of 42.98 seconds, despite the absence of Gina Lückenkemper in Guangzhou. The German quartet took Olympic bronze in the relay in Paris with Lückenkemper.

Unfortunately, the mixed 4x400-meter relay team and the men's 4x400-meter relay team finished fourth and sixth respectively, missing out on direct qualification for Tokyo. Fourteen nations have qualified for the World Championships in the 4x100-meter (men and women) and 4x400-meter (men, women, and mixed) relays. On Sunday, all relay teams that missed the final will compete in a second qualifying round, with two teams per heat qualifying for Tokyo.

The German team has been preparing for the World Relays in a training camp in Kuala Lumpur. The mixed 4x100-meter relay event, where women run the first two legs and men bring the baton home, is new to the World Relays, and the German team finished fourth in the heat. The debut team of Sina Mayer, Sina Kammerschmitt, Aleksandar Askovic, and Chidiera Onuoha finished in 41.43 seconds. The mixed 4x400-meter relay will not be held at the World Championships in Tokyo but will be featured at the European Championships in 2026 and the Olympic Games in 2028.

Competing in the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, the race is on to achieve automatic qualification for the World Championships in Tokyo.
